Buying a Home in San Diego: Del Mar

Del Mar used to be known as the playground of Hollywood’s rich and famous, but over the years the quiet coastal getaway has become an excellent place to live for anyone buying a house in San Diego. If you’re looking for spacious houses, quiet streets and a lifestyle that flirts with luxury, Del Mar is definitely the place to be.

With miles of pristine beaches, numerous gourmet restaurants and a shopping district unique even for Southern California, Del Mar is typically thought of as a vacation hotspot. Yet about 4,500 people call this laid-back town home – and it’s easy to see why. The town’s picturesque public library has been the wedding site for numerous celebrity marriages. The English Tudor architecture that characterizes many of the homes here is a favorite with historians. And to top it all off, it takes just a few minutes to walk on over to the University of California at San Diego. The city even has its own horse racing track for those evenings when you’re feeling particularly classy.

The best part about Del Mar, though, is its proximity to the heart of San Diego. Commuters can drive from their house to the financial district in less than 20 minutes, and there are plenty of streetcars running in case the car is on the fritz.

As with most communities in San Diego, the price of a home in Del Mar is a little higher than you’d find in other places across America. A three-bedroom condo will run you about $300,000, and the price only increases from there. Expensive as that may be, Del Mar’s calm waters and laid-back atmosphere make it worth the price for many people who are buying a house in San Diego. If you’re looking for a prime piece of San Diego real estate with a truly calm disposition, then Del Mar should be your next hometown.
