Buying a Home in San Diego: South Park

South Park is a newer neighborhood in America’s Finest City that’s safe enough for children but lively enough for young parents and professionals. Its tree-lined streets and Spanish revival houses make it a beautiful place for anyone buying a home in San Diego.

The first thing you’ll notice when arriving in South Park is its excellent location. Situated in the heart of the city, the neighborhood is only a five-minute walk from the business district, downtown and Balboa Park. It’s so easy to get around, in fact, that most of the residents have forgone the expense of owning a car in favor of using San Diego’s excellent walking paths as their primary means of transportation.

In addition to being one of the most convenient neighborhoods in the city, South Park also has a reputation as one of the most diverse, so if you think that variety is the spice of life, you’ll be in good company. Here you’ll find residents of every creed, cadence and color, and there are dozens of eclectic businesses, boutiques and taverns that offer everything from pet salon service to craft-brewed beer.

Although South Park hosts various art shows and festivals every year, it’s best known for the annual Old House Fair, which celebrates the wealth of Spanish revival and craftsman bungalows that make up most of the community’s housing units. In the summer you can also join in on one of the neighborhood-wide walkabouts by taking a free trolley to one of three designated starting points and then enjoying a leisurely stroll throughout South Park with your friends and neighbors, accompanied all the while by live music.

Because South Park is such a popular neighborhood, anyone who wants a bungalow to call their own should expect to pay at least $400,000. Although that isn’t cheap, it’s a great value for a piece of San Diego real estate in such a prime location.

If you’re buying a home in San Diego, then keep South Park near the top of your list. Its clean streets, outgoing residents and wide variety of shops make it one of the best neighborhoods in the city.
