Bathtubs

Enameled steel or cast iron tubs are tough and resistant to most chemicals. Enameled steel is resistant to chips than enameled cast iron. They can tolerate occasional scrubbing with a mildly abrasive cleanser. But don’t use abrasive cleaners often because they will wear away the finish and scum will begin to cling to this rougher surface, making cleaning even harder. Before using a rust remover, read the manufacturer’s label. Those containing hydroflouric acid will harm any enameled finish and shouldn’t be used. Fiberglass needs a gentle touch. Use no abrasive cleaners at all and be careful of chemical cleansers. Some fiberglass manufacturers recommend the use of new-formula scouring cleansers. Products containing EDTA or ethylene diamine tetraacetate are acceptable for fiberglass.

Rings In the Tub

Bathtub rings are a greasy combination of body oils, dirt and sometimes minerals, if the water in your area is hard. Try wiping with undiluted ammonia using rubber gloves, or sprinkle a damp sponge vigorously. For stubborn stains, rub with a paste of water and automatic dishwashing detergent. Rinse clean and then wipe dry.

Soap Scum and Mineral Deposits

Hard water and soap team up to create a phenomenon known as soap curd which is a hard gray film that can blanket tubs, sinks and shower enclosures. A regular wipe-down with a damp sponge or a paper towel soaked in lemon juice will keep soap curd at bay. To attack a buildup of scum, don rubber gloves and apply a paste of cream of tartar and hydrogen peroxide. Scrub the paste lightly into the stain and allow to dry. Rinse thoroughly and buff dry. Or clean soap film and mineral buildup with commercial products.

Removing Nonskid Tape

If the pieces of nonskid tapes in your tub are dirty looking, you can remove them cleanly. First, scrape them off with a straight-edged razor blade that has been dipped in soapy water. For safety’s sake mount the blade in a protective holder. Remove any adhesive residue with a paper towel dipped in acetone or acetone-based nail polish remover. Finally, rinse the area thoroughly.
