Buying a Home in Connecticut: Old Saybrook

You can’t make a list of the prettiest places to buy a house in Connecticut without including Old Saybrook. Highlighted by a gorgeous coastline and one of the best school districts in the state, the historic town is a wonderful place to start a family or spend your golden years.

Old Saybrook is one of the most historic towns in the Constitution State. Founded in 1635, the town served as the first home of Yale University, and it was an important colonial trading hub as well. The town has 15 buildings on the National Historic Registry, including the Lynde Point Lighthouse and the Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse. And on top of that, the design of the Connecticut state flag is actually based on the Old Saybrook town seal.

History isn’t the only thing you’ll find in Old Saybrook, though. In addition to its pristine beaches, its marinas and its multiple public parks, Old Saybrook is home to the Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center – a multimillion-dollar theater named after the town’s most famous resident.

You’ll always have something to do in Old Saybrook. There are hiking and biking trails throughout the town, as well as golf courses, public parks and some eclectic shopping on Main Street. If you need to get away from the country for a while, you can catch a train to New York or Boston at the local station. Or just drive yourself, since both cities are only 100 miles away.

Although there are only 10,000 residents in Old Saybrook, the people are proud of their small-town status. The town’s 36 civic clubs are all very active in preserving Old Saybrook’s historic district as well as organizing community-wide celebrations for every major holiday. Because of the care the citizens of Old Saybrook put into their town, the average house costs about $300,000. This might seem steep for first-time families, but considering the quality of the location, it’s worth thinking about.

If you’re looking for a small but active community on some of the most pristine Connecticut real estate around, Old Saybrook should be at the top of your list. Whether you want to walk on the beach every morning or just march in a great Memorial Day parade, Old Saybrook just can’t be beat.
